Spring100 Devotional
Lay Aside Every Weight
Mr Wesley Strackbein || Week 4 Spring100 Devotional
As we run the race of life, we can be hindered by sin and a preoccupation with worldly cares. Knowing this, we must βlay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares usβ (Heb. 12:1).
The βweightβ in this first clause can be lawful pursuits that weβve elevated out of proportion. These can include making money, tending our personal property, maintaining our physical health, or any other earthly concern.
To be clear: We have positive duties to perform on all these fronts, as God created the world βgoodβ (Gen. 1:31) and called us to be faithful stewards of our money, lands, and bodies (Matt. 25:14-30; Prov. 12:11; Prov. 25:16).
Yet the moment we give greater prominence to the cares of the world than we do to Christβs kingly interests, we err. We become encumbered from our most important aim which is to βseek first the kingdom of God and His righteousnessβ (Matt. 6:33).
So, in view of the eternal race, we must rid ourselves of otherwise good things when they become excess baggage. If theyβre slowing us down, we must put them in their place.
The second thing weβre to lay aside is βthe sin which so easily ensnares usβ (Heb. 12:1).
Unlike lawful worldly cares, sin has no rightful role in our lives at all. Yet we cannot wrest ourselves free of it in our own power.
Every one of us is beset by sin at birth. It is imputed to our very nature, passed down from Adam through the generations (Rom. 5:12; Ps. 51:5).
Without Christβs help, sinβs crushing weight always brings on death (Rom. 6:23), but if βwe confess our sins [to Him], he is faithful and just to forgive us from all unrighteousnessβ (1 John 1:9). Once redeemed through Christβs perfect work (2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 5:8-19), we are no longer βslaves of sinβ (Rom. 6:6) and can βwalk in newness of lifeβ (Rom. 6:4).
Now that weβre able to reject sin, we must βmake no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lustsβ (Rom. 13:14).
Clinging to the smallest sin will slow us down in our race. Sin βso easily ensnares usβ (Heb. 12:1), and if left unchecked, it can sideline us in shame.
Let us, then, heed these sober commands:
βDo you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lumpβ (1 Cor. 5:6-7).
β. . . do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lustsβ (Rom 6:12).
βBeloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soulβ (1 Pet. 2:11).
While our eternal soul may be secure in Christ, giving way to any pet sinβbe it anger, lust, pride, envy, discontentment, or some other viceβwill hamper us in the race ahead (Heb. 12:1), for a βdouble minded man is unstable in all his waysβ (James 1:8).
So let us give sin the βblack flagββno quarter to this violator of Godβs Word and our personal testimonyβeven as we put lawful pursuits, that are out of proportion, in their place.
Only by doing this will we run our race well.

I also won’t be able to run the 5K I was so excited for. But today when we made it less than 0.5 mile round trip to the swing set by the lake I realized it’s not about how many miles you walk but your attitude when you walk them. We could have been upset by what we weren’t able to do but instead we chose to enjoy what we could do, and it made all the difference.” Sarah B. ππΌππ» Perfect encouragement! Thank you, Sarah! β₯οΈ

Such a full week here! Finding beauty as I enjoy my sunset Spring100 walks with Bekah this week. Romans 9:16 has been a verse on my mind as I grabbed my miles this week, “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” I am so thankful for the Lord’s mercy. Keep on pressing toward the goal! You all are doing such a fabulous job!!ππΌββοΈπ―

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1

Rebekah
Last week was my best week yet as I logged just over 12.5 miles. Some with my sister, some with friends. And while we weren’t in the path of totality, my sister and I did walk a mile as the sun was coming back to full light.
Rachel @Spring100
WAY TO GO, Rebekah!!!πππ»π―

Praise the Lord for another week of Spring 100!
Sadly, it was too cloudy where we are living to see the eclipse. We were able to enjoy seeing pictures from family who got a really good view of it!π€©
Lilly Wiscaver
Week four done already?!? Wow! And yes, I got to see the eclipse. We were in the path of totality this time.
Rachel @Spring100
It was pretty amazing, wasn’t it?! ππ€©
Bethany
I was blessed to be able to see the solar eclipse! It was cloudy, and it looked like we were going to miss totality, but then the clouds parted as though God had opened them so we could see His handiwork. Such an amazing moment! God is so good!!
Rachel @Spring100
Same here!!! So thankful the clouds parted just in time. It was a wonderful experience! ππ»
lauren92dcb3ec35
I’m glad you saw it, Bethany! The sky was very cloudy where I was, too, until about an hour before the eclipse. Occasionally, a cloud would blow over the eclipse, but we could see it very clearly for the most part.
John Silvey
I was driving for work when the eclipse happened, so I didnβt get to actually look at the sun but I was just off the path of totality so it got fairly dark which was neat to see!
lauren92dcb3ec35
Great post, Rachel! I love seeing the photos.
I did see the solar eclipse. I traveled 2 hours north to be in totality and stayed with extended family. Totality only lasted for a few seconds where I was, but it was really cool to experience. I took a 2.21 mile walk with one of my aunts while the eclipse was in the partial phase.
Rachel @Spring100
I am so glad you enjoyed the photos, Lauren! βΊοΈ And happy you got to enjoy the eclipse!!! π
Kr!st!na
Saw some bites out of the sun…Haha, at least I saw the 2017 one in Idaho! π It was ya’ll’s turn! π
Rachel @Spring100
π Thanks for sending it our way this time! π
Sarah H
We weren’t in the path of totality, but had over 80%. I didn’t have any glasses, so I couldn’t look directly at it, but did make a viewer out of a cardboard box. It somewhat worked!
Rachel @Spring100
80% is still pretty good! ππ― It was really neat.ππΌ
tirzahtroyer
We used cereal boxes once as well, and it worked pretty well.
tirzahtroyer
We really had a fun time with the eclipse. We invited friends over, and at the highest point, it got to 82% totality. It was so cool to see!
Rachel @Spring100
Sounds like such a fun time!! πππ»
Chyanne Lehman
Yes we got to watch the solar eclipse it was a beautiful day for it!
Rachel @Spring100
It truly was a beautiful day! ππ»
Melissa Ansiel
We spent an amazing weekend with the Kremer family in Medina, Ohio and enjoyed the second total solar eclipse of our lifetime. It was a different experience this time as the birds were more active than the crickets, and the corona seemed more silvery than white from our vantage point. The temperature drop, twilight colors in the middle of the day when darkness came over the earth from the moon’s shadow, and the solar flares and prominences all gave glory to God! We sang praises to God for His amazing work of Creation, and rejoice in how His orderliness is clearly scene in His perfect design of the heavens!
Rachel @Spring100
Amen! π₯°
