“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1
You must first read Hebrews Chapter 11 to understand the context of this verse. The writer has just recounted some of the many events that God has given us in the Scriptures as examples of regular people living by faith not sight. We are completely surrounded, not by an enemy that seeks to devour us (although he is prowling around) but we are actually engulfed in a cloud of witnesses. These being the people, men and women, young and old who have gone before us by faith. These witnesses serve as a great encouragement to us. We do not need to focus on and fear an enemy. We should be aware and alert but we should be strengthened and empowered by the host of witnesses surrounding us that testify of God’s faithfulness, crying out to those of us who are still here on this earth called to walk by faith. Crying out they remind us, “He is faithful! You can fully trust Him with every single aspect of your life! Look nowhere else but to Him to meet all your needs!”
Walking by faith requires a bit of tenacity. You have to be willing to do things no one else around you is doing. You must be willing to walk and live out your life believing in the promises of God. One example for us is Abram. Once Isaac was born, Abram no longer required faith to hope for the son of promise by Sara. Although, for years prior to Isaac’s birth, Abram believed that God’s promise to him was true, that God was faithful and would make him the father of a great nation destined to inherit the land of Canaan. Abram never saw the land inherited by his descendants but he believed and remained faithful to his God. Every day he got up maybe wondering when this son would be born, what this multitude of descendants might be like or what it would be like to truly own the land. Day after day, week after week, Abram (soon known as Abraham) continued to walk by faith believing that he was the father of a great nation even though, physically speaking, he did not yet have a son. He believed that his descendants would inherit the land even though in his lifetime he never possessed it. That’s faith, waking up every day, showing up to perform the duties, obediently and humbly engaging in the life that God has called you to.
Much later, a descendant of Abraham would write: “I have learned in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content.” Phil 4:11. Abraham had learned to be content. Jesus exemplified this and Paul the apostle admonished us to continually press on to be learners of contentment. Contentment requires faith and peace that comes from knowing our God, not just by other people’s example, but by living our own lives by faith. Abraham was not perfect. He failed many times but that didn’t stop him from getting back up, repenting, and faithfully following his God.
Since we have these beautiful examples of people living their lives by faith it encourages us to do the same. We are not alone. God knows everything and cares about you. He wants to teach you to walk by faith, not sight.
Whatever your current circumstances, you are where you are because it’s the perfect place for you to grow in faith and Christlikeness–that’s the goal of life.

My best day was 5.58 miles on March 27th, but probably the most exciting day was this past Saturday when I ran at a 5K in 33:47.4. I used to be bedridden, and last year, I did a challenge to walk 100 miles with my mom and some friends since this official challenge wasn’t hosted. That really helped me get back into shape, and this year, I’m getting my 100 miles in faster than ever. I only have 15.48 miles to go. I hope to finish this weekend! Thanks for another fun and encouraging post, Rachel!
Rachel @Spring100
Praise the LORD!!!!! 🤩🥳 This is so encouraging to hear. Well done!!! That’s a fast 5K. 😁 So happy to have you here this year…. See you at the finish line!!🙋🏼♀️
Lauren Watt
Thanks, Rachel! You are such a cheerleader! (Also, I accidentally published under my WordPress username earlier–whoops!)
Rachel @Spring100
Aw!! It’s a pleasure to cheer you on, Lauren!!!! So excited!!🥳🥳🥳🥳

My best day was on April 17th when I got 4.18 miles. Phew, that was tough, but I was glad I made it after my sore muscles got better!
Rachel @Spring100
That’s a nice long walk!!!!🤩🙌🏼 Way to go, Jane!!
Jane Flournoy
I hope to get five or more today if I have time!
Rachel @Spring100
😅🙌🏼 you’re motivated!!

Haha! 😂 I said, I HOPE to. We’ll see. 🙃

Rachel @Spring100
🤩🎉 way to goooooo!!!!
Sarah Silvey
3.3 was my best day on April 9th! I remember that was a combination of several walks, but my longest walk at one time was 3.2… a Sunday afternoon sibling walk. ☺️
Rachel @Spring100
Very nice, Sarah!! Way to go!🙌🏼🎉 I have those combination days too. 😉 Sometimes the weather is too gorgeous and I have to take a break from work to grab a mile.😍😍😍

Rachel , even though I walk every day, it’s a joy to know I am walking with people all over the world👍you know now I am curious how many are over 80 years old. That’s my challenge now. Living in a retirement community I am an inspiration to those who can not get out and walk. Thank you. Joanne S
Rachel @Spring100
You know, I’d love to know how many over 80 too!! 🧡🧡🧡 It’s a joy to walk these miles with you. Way to go!!! You’re an inspiration to ME!!!!!🙋🏼♀️

I’m in my early 70s, but my walking buddy for many years, Gita Barker, was 100 years old on her final Spring100!! She is living with a daughter and will celebrate her 103rd birthday on June 5th, if the Lord wills. 🙂
MJS
Joanne! You are an encouragement and inspiration in the Lord! Keep it up in Jesus’ name!🙌🏻💖

April 13 was my best day with 20 miles. I walked with 25 other college students, sharing pro-life literature around a nearby city, encouraging people to choose life 🤍 Wonderful job so far, everyone!! Keep going! 🏃🏻♀️🎉

My thanks to Mr. Jack Fuhrmann for the excellent reminder to walk by faith, not by sight. Walking by faith, when we don’t know the way ahead, means we are trusting God. This pleases Him. It is impossible to please Him without faith (Heb. 11:6) because we are taking away His rightful rulership and trusting ourselves.
By the grace of God, I’ve walked at least 2 miles every day since the start of Spring100! My best has been 3 miles, which I’ve managed about 6 times. I injured my left foot on day one, trying to walk fast after several months of hardly walking! Yesterday was the first time to see significant improvement in the swelling, praise God! The pain is nearly gone too! (Since having radiation for cancer in 2015, it’s easy to fracture bones – a long-term side effect! Sometimes I get rambunctious and forget that.) 🙂
Amanda
My best day was 4.4 miles on March 26th. Really enjoyed the devotional, and it was neat because we have been looking at Abraham’s life in our Sunday services. It has been encouraging to see how he, like us and everyone else, had times where he was very weak in his faith. But then you see him grow and trust God in amazing ways! 🙌🏻
Also, congratulations to everyone who has passed the 100 mile mark! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Way to go!! 💯
Mary
This has been one of the best challenges for me ever!! I started off hardly able to walk 1 mile with taking multiple rests. Today was my best day at 3 fairly steady miles!! I am so happy at the strength and motivation I have been able to build up through this. I love the quality time this gives me with my children too!
